Business after Brexit

Written by
The last 3 and a half years have been filled with the uncertainty of leave or remain for Brexit. Since December 2019 there has been some confusion as to what is actually going to happen to the UK. There are still so many unanswered questions and most businesses are not even prepared for the changes.

Brexit update:

On 31st January 2020, the UK officially left the EU. Now that we are out of the EU, you might ask what this means for the UK and your workplace or business. For now we are not represented in the EU Parliament e.g. we have no say in any of the EU institutions.

As the UK is in an 11-month transition period, we must still obey rules and are still in the customs union and single market. Throughout the next 11 months a trade deal will be reached with the EU in order to figure out how businesses will continue to work through Brexit. The transition period will last until 31st December 2020. Unlike the lengthy process of coming to an exit decision, there will not be any prolonging this transition period.

The impact of Brexit so far:

Pressure is mounting as businesses are losing their patience and need to prepare for the changes that are coming. Many companies have had to make drastic changes such as; redundancies, moving away or putting new policies in place. Research from TrustedShops tells us that Sony has already announced the transfer of its European HQ to the Netherlands to avoid the Brexit disruption.

British Workers in the EU:

The government negotiating table doesn't want to punish or push out citizens living in each other's lands. Therefore, there has been an agreement put in place which states that everyone is allowed to stay where they are. The agreement also ensures the same rights for employment, education and housing.

EU workers who are in the UK or want to work in the UK:

If you are an EU worker and living in the UK then you will need to apply to the EU Settlement scheme.

Business after Brexit:

TrustedShops tells us that the EU market currently covers 28 (-1) countries with 500 million potential customers. Not being part of the EU eliminates the privileges of free trade, free movement of goods and services (and people), and with it cuts off direct access to a massive pool of prospective buyers. Along with Germany and France, the UK belongs to the strongest markets in the EU. But in the event of a Brexit, the internal market will be harmed. The UK will lose it's most important trading partners (excluding the US and China) with countries like Germany or upcoming markets including Spain.
