How to tackle Coronavirus in the workplace

Written by
As you might have heard over the recent weeks, countries have been infected with the Coronavirus (COVID-19). Coronavirus is a new illness that can affect your lungs and airways. Research from Forbes tells us that the virus started in Wuhan City, China and has now spread to an estimated 59 countries and over 87,000 people globally are estimated to be infected. For some people the virus can be severe and even fatal.

Countries have only just started to take serious action to the virus such as, redundancies, cutting costs, office closures and even taking time off work. With people reporting that they have the virus daily, this means that there is a massive impact on employers every day. The UK Government's advice is not to close the workplace even if employees have the virus. It is far better to have employees work from home for a few days whilst waiting for tests etc. This will make sure that no-one else in the business gets potentially infected and the business can still run.

However, the above doesn't mean that we should be worried. We can still work and business will still go on. But employers should prepare for potential impacts of the virus and how it can affect their workforce.

Here are some tips on how to tackle Coronavirus in the workplace:

  • Wash your hands with soap and water often - do this for at least 20 seconds
  • Sanitise your hands
  • Wash your hands when you get home or into work
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze
  • Bin used tissues straight away and wash your hands afterwards
  • Try to avoid close contact with people who are unwell
  • DO NOT touch your eyes, nose or mouth if your hands are unclean
  • Clean your work area before and after use
  • If you don't already have a workplace cleaner then you should think about getting one
Symptoms of Coronavirus:

  • Cough
  • High temperature
  • Shortness of breath
The symptoms are similar to other illnesses that are much more common, such as cold and the flu. However if you find yourself with the above symptoms you need to call 111 for medical advice. (DO NOT go into a GP surgery, pharmacy or hospital).
