CIS - working under the Construction Industry Scheme
If you are self-employed in the UK construction industry and are working for a contractor, you must register for the Construction Industry Scheme (CIS). The scheme covers practically all aspects of construction works, from site preparation and repairs through to decoration and demolition.
How to get a career in Construction
A career in construction doesn't have to begin and end with labouring or bricklaying. With degrees and apprenticeships available there are all kinds of options to develop your career. With every job you are expected to start from the bottom and work your way up. If you put in the hard work and effort and be a team player then your boss can rely on you and you will go a long way which will eventually get you to where you want to be.
About the Construction industry
The Construction industry is one of the largest in the UK economy and statistics from the House of Commons Library tells us that back in 2018 it contributed £117 billion to the UK economy. The industry is made up of a variation of sectors and employs 3.1 million people over 9% of the workforce. Construction is crucial to our economy and helps invest in our futures e.g. building schools, hospitals and houses and future businesses.
