Stuck with what career path to take?

Written by

Choosing a new career path is both exciting and overwhelming with multiple ‘career surveys’ out there it can feel like you are in a maze with lots of dead ends! Do you currently have a career but looking to move to a different career path? Make sure that before you make any quick changes that your current role can’t be transformed to a different career you do enjoy. It is important that you set some time out to think about your career path and what will ultimately make you happy and the steps you need to do to get there. There are a few ways you can choose the best path for you:

Firstly, think about your Passions and Interests

It is important to find the job that keeps you motivated, energised and content. To do this is by picking a career that involves an aspect that you are passionate about. The reason why choosing based on your passions is a good career tool is because every job has roadblocks however if you are genuinely interested in what you are doing it will break through these roadblocks. A few ways you may be able to pick your passions are:

  • Remember what you loved as a child, our truest passions emerge in childhood whether that be science, helping people, a born leader etc.
  • Write all your passions, likes and interests down. This will start to fill your head with what will truly make you happy down the road because essentially you spend more time working than not and for your health and wellbeing this is important.

Secondly, think about what you want from a career

With many different careers out there offering various benefits, salaries, and hours it is important to understand what you want out of working. This may be a high salary, a great benefits package or certain working hours to fit in with your lifestyle.  Once you have decided what you would like from a career, bullet point these done alongside your passions to start mapping together an idea of what your dream career would look like.

Use the internet next!

Now that you have your two lists after following the above tips, the next stage is to start looking for job titles that fit your criteria. Start by typing into google “jobs that involve” and then one of your passions. For example, “jobs that involve designing” could bring up job titles such as Interior designer, graphic designer, Marketing etc. Write all the job titles that come up with your passions to then start looking deeply into each role and how it would fit into what you would enjoy, the hours you would normally work and the estimated salary for each job title. A few more points that would be beneficial to research are how many jobs are out there doing this career? Is it unique? Is there a Gap in the market for relevant experience?

Qualifications for your desired role

Most careers require certain qualifications to be able to be qualified for that specific job. With the world we live in today, we are lucky to have various ways to complete courses – online, through companies or within colleges and universities. Once you have a career or two in mind you can start to map out what stages you need to complete before getting your dream role. Start by entering in to google “How to become a…” and the job titles you are looking into.

Use the advice of the people you have around you as well as they may be able to help you with further tips on what you have researched as each person has different experience and views that may be able to assist yon further.
