Why temporary work is making a comeback and why you should consider choosing the temp life…

According to the office of national statistics the number of temporary employees both full and part time have been at the highest rate since September 2017. Temporary staff are often an integral part of many businesses across the UK, with many companies looking for a flexible workforce to provide additional support at busy periods, for example with projects, peak months when there is an increase in business, or for holiday or sickness cover. Temporary assignments can range from a few days to a few months, or even longer. There are several reasons why the rate could have risen, and we explore some of the points in this blog.

Redundancy due to the pandemic

Unfortunately, a lot of people in the last two years have found themselves without a job due to the Covid-19 Pandemic and this resulted in a lot of candidates going for the temporary work option to be able to get back on the horse in bringing in income. A temporary assignment can often turn into a permanent position, so some feel it is their way back into work.

Lockdown made me do it!

Going into lockdown in the pandemic made people do a lot of thinking, purely because there wasn’t much else to do! This resulted in a lot of life decisions being made such as deciding to go back to studying, growing your family with a new baby or a new pet! All these decisions require more flexibility with working and a lot of people found that temporary work allowed them to find time for studying as well as more flexibility to enable you to spend time with your new family. 

Lack of direction

This, as frustrating as it may seem, is a normal feeling. What we find with temporary work is that candidates can build up their experience as well as be able to work in a number of different companies giving them an insight on different processes and what types of atmospheres and company culture suited them best! It is almost a “try before you buy” as it will show you if the career is all you dreamed it would be.
