Busy Bee Sponsor Lynsey, who is taking on a 970 mile bike ride journey across Britain!

Written by

Busy Bee Recruitment are sponsoring the inspirational Lynsey Newbery to take on a 970 mile bike ride across Britain starting on the 9th Sept and finishing on the 18th Sept.

Who is Lynsey Newbery, and why is she doing this challenge to support Motor Neurone Disease Association (MNDA)?

Lynsey's story: "I am a regular lady who likes to keep fit and ride her bike.  I have a very supportive husband, two grown up children and a dog, so I am pretty average person.  I am turning 60 this year, which is not sitting in my comfort zone.

In September 2021 a Facebook advert came up to sign up for 2022 Ride Across Britain, This is a cycle ride from Lands End to John O Groats.   I attend a HIT class in Over and I was talking to the trainer  Jim about it , He said simply “ feel the fear and do it anyway” so I went home and signed up !  I also signed up to raise money for a Charity which is dear to my heart, Motor Neurone Disease Association (MNDA), After is signed up I was terrified.

Why this ride, Its on my bucket list always has been and I thought if I don’t do it now , when ?  Why MNDA? my wonderful father died from illnesses associated with MND and he had MND for seven years.  MND is a cruel debilitating disease.  messages from the motor neurones gradually stop reaching the muscles. This leads the muscles to weaken, stiffen and waste, which can affect how you walk, talk, eat, drink and breathe. It affects 1 in 300 people, Famously Stephen Hawking had MND as to does Rob Burrow ( Rugby player), as yet there is no Cure and you die from illnesses related to MND.

My Dad was diagnosed in 2001 and he died in 2008. Supporting someone who has MND who you love and you watch struggling mentally and physically with the disease is a very tough ask, but you do it because you love them.  My Dad had a wonderful philosophy, he said that life was a book, sometimes you were lucky enough to go back and re read the chapters, but MND means you cannot do that, and once the page was turned you could not go back, so making memories and ensuring you got the best out of every day was so important.

I have also had a friend Gilly who I worked out with when I was in my 20’s she was super fit and active, sadly she died last year from MND, she left this world way to early leaving her Husband and Daughter aged 18.

So I have dedicated this year of turning 60 into getting fit enough to Ride Across Britain, to raise money for MND.  I reached out to businesses that I felt could help me and I am so grateful to Busy Bees for sponsoring me for this ride.  I am proudly wearing their logo on the front of my shirt.

I have trained hard, cycling over 4000 miles and climbing 160,000ft . I go to HIT classes and have taken up weight lifting to get strong legs for the hills.  I feel great and  I am really ready to take this challenge on and get to the finish line at John O Groats."
