4 Tips for succeeding in your virtual interview

Written by

A virtual interview is a job interview that takes place remotely, using video software such as Zoom or Microsoft Teams. Due to current circumstances, virtual interviews are much more common, so it is essential to learn the process if you are starting your job search. Virtual interviews often follow the same structure as face-to-face interviews therefore they should be treated in the same way. With that said, there are a few more key considerations to bear in mind when preparing for these.

Prepare in advance

Just like any interview, it is important to prepare - this means planning answers to potential questions, researching the company and reviewing the job description. It would also be a good idea to compile some of your own questions to ask and have a copy of your CV to hand. Do not be tempted to search for answers online during your interview, your interviewer will notice!

Test your technology

As soon as you agree to a virtual interview it is imperative that you check and test your technology several times beforehand to ensure you are set up for success. You should check your internet connection, camera and audio, you should also download and test the necessary video software. Join the call early to ensure the video and sound are on and in working order. Technical skills are one of the top traits employers look for so if there are problems during the interview the hiring manager may question your abilities.

Minimise distractions

Virtual interviews come with distractions you would not normally have to worry about, so it is important to minimise these in advance. If possible, choose a room that is clean and professional looking with a desk or table to place your laptop on. Be sure to ask your household to keep the noise down during your interview. Before your interview turn off the TV, put any devices on silent mode and close the windows.

Dress for success

Dress for success and look the part! When you get dressed for a video interview you should dress just as formal as you would for a face-to-face interview. Doing so will make you appear professional and show you are serious about the position. It will also make you feel more confident and prepared.
