National Manufacturing Day
National Manufacturing Day is held annually on the first Friday in October with events that continue throughout the month. The aim of the celebration is to inspire young people to pursue careers in the manufacturing industry whilst educating the public on the importance of the role manufacturers play in our daily lives. This year National Manufacturing Day is particularly important with manufacturing being at the heart of some of the most impactful work being done in response to the pandemic.
The manufacturing industry:
Manufacturing is the process of transforming goods, materials or substances into finished products that can be sold in the marketplace. Machines and equipment are typically used in the manufacturing process however some goods are still manufactured by hand. The main types of manufacturing that take place in the UK include industries such as aerospace, high tech manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, and food.
Starting a career in manufacturing:
If you have good communication skills, problem-solving abilities, teamwork skills, the ability to think on your feet and possess a genuine interest in the industry then a career in manufacturing may be for you. Educational requirements vary significantly based on the job. Some positions may provide on-the-job training, while others may require a relevant degree. If you know what area of manufacturing you would like to start a career in it would definitely be worth gaining the relevant qualifications so that you have an advantage during the recruitment process.
