5 ways to impress during your probationary period
Written by KayleighStarting a new job is an exciting but daunting experience, it is an opportunity to establish yourself in the next step of your career. Probation periods are used to help employers be sure they have made the right decision in offering you a job, so it is important to make the best possible impression in those first few months. Your probation period is your time to shine and prove to your new employer that you have the skills and abilities you promised them.
Here are our 5 top tips on how to impress your new employer and pass your probation period with flying colours:
Get to know your colleagues –
Be friendly and talk to your new colleagues, take the time to get to know them and make light conversation. Remember to smile! This will show you are a genuine and approachable person. Taking an interest in your colleagues will impress your employer as you are proving your communication skills.
Absorb information and ask questions -
When starting any new job, you will have lots of information thrown at you. Try not to let this overwhelm you, just try and remember as much as you can. Our top tip is to always carry a notepad and jot down as many notes as possible. You should ask as many questions as you can during the first few weeks of starting your new role as getting all the information you are going to need to succeed is crucial at this point.
Show enthusiasm -
Show your passion for your new role by demonstrating a positive ‘can-do’ attitude, start by making sure you looked engaged and ready to learn. Accept any given task with a smile and always be willing to take on new duties.
Be proactive -
Make sure you go out of your way to be helpful, if you run out of things to do go and ask a colleague if you can lend a hand. Showing you can be trusted to keep busy will impress your employer.
Demonstrate punctuality -
Make an extra effort to show up on time during your probation period, being late suggests you are unorganised and have poor time management skills. It is also important not to leave as soon as it hits home time, this could look like you have been clock watching and are uninterested in your role.
