How to deal with job rejection and plan your next steps
Written by KayleighNo matter what stage you are at in your job search, it is likely that you have experienced rejection somewhere along the way. Dealing with rejection in your job search can be very difficult as it can really knock your confidence. No one enjoys getting turned down for a job, especially if you have done a lot of preparation for a role that you really wanted. But with the right mindset, you can turn your experiences into positive development opportunities.
Top Tips:
Do not take it personally -
It is unlikely that being rejected from a job is anything to do with you personally. At the end of the day the employer must decide based on the candidate’s skills, experiences and personality to see who would best suit the role. Always remember you are not going to land every job you apply for!
Take a step back and reflect -
Have you had an unsuccessful interview? Take some time to think about what went wrong – was it a specific interview question? Did you not do enough research into the company? It is important to learn from your mistakes so you can avoid making these again in future interviews.
Ask for feedback -
There is no harm in asking the employer for honest feedback after rejection, in fact it is valuable information that can help you improve your approach moving forward. Knowing what you could improve upon will give you a real advantage when you apply for other roles.
Keep learning and developing -
When looking for a new job opportunity it is a good idea to work on and improve your skills to give you the advantage when it comes to interview. For example, you may want to undertake a relevant training course that would look good on your CV.
Stay positive -
The best way to deal with rejection and plan your next steps is to stay positive! As hard as it may feel sometimes, it is so important to keep smiling and turn each rejection into a learning opportunity. Stay focused on what you are aiming to achieve because you will get there!
