On 16th September schools across England and Wales are encouraged to celebrate their Teaching Assistants. National Teaching Assistants' Day was created to recognise the valuable contribution Teaching Assistants make to the education and support of school children across the UK.
What is a teaching assistant?
Teaching assistants provide essential support in schools both in and out of the classroom with duties ranging from class preparation to overseeing a child’s personal and social development. Some TAs work exclusively with pupils who have special educational needs (SEN) or other specific needs. It is an incredibly rewarding role to have and is crucial to the UK’s education system.
What are the career prospects?
As you progress, you will take on more responsibility – you could become a senior assistant, apply for a higher-level teaching assistant role or train to become an early year’s teacher. Working as a TA can act as an excellent stepping stone towards becoming a teacher. Some employers will actively support this progression and provide you with the relevant training opportunities.
How to become a teaching assistant:
- Complete a college course e.g. Level 2 or 3 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools or Level 3 Diploma in Childcare and Education
- Apply for an apprenticeship e.g. a teaching assistant advanced apprenticeship or an intermediate or advanced apprenticeship in supporting teaching and learning in schools
- Volunteer at a local school or apply directly
