Seeking a Mechanical Engineer – South Cambridge 

Working with our client, a family owned business that designs, manufactures and distributes innovative Scientific equipment. With a client base including academic, pharmaceutical, biotech, agrochemical, chemical, and fine chemical markets we are looking for a highly skilled Mechanical Engineer holding around 5 years of relevant experience.

Location: South Cambridge, Cambridgeshire
Salary: £Negotiable + Discretionary annual bonus!
Hours: Monday – Friday 8.30am – 5pm (flexi hours may be offered)

This is a diverse role that will see you working as part of the R&D team helping to develop, launch and support new and innovative products. About you (cont.). You will hold excellent communication skills with the ability to interact effectively with colleagues and partners of various backgrounds. A well organised approach is essential for this position along with the desire to get stuck in with hands on work!

Duties may include:

  • Designing products at component and system level
  • Creating innovative solutions to meet customer requirements
  • Creation of prototypes, components, assemblies and jigs
  • Involved in the product finish, material identification and manufacturing processes
  • Identification, evaluation and integration of electronic components (power supplies, PCB’s, motors, fittings, connectors, sensors and firmware)
  • Managing drawings within document management PDM system
  • Using 3D SolidWorks software
  • Sourcing materials, suppliers and sub-contractors
  • Establishing test protocols, collecting and analysing results, reporting
  • Planning and costing
  • Reporting to include presenting updates and progress reports
  • Supporting projects into product release and production
  • 25% of this role will be to work closely within estimating, designing and project management of complex and large reaction systems

Skills and Experience:

  • Degree in mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, industrial design, or similar
  • 5 years minimum working experience in an industrial or R&D environment
  • Proven track record of delivering projects on time and to budget
  • Design experience including glass reactors and reactor system components
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes and materials
  • Excellent knowledge of 3D SolidWorks
  • Working knowledge of electronics (e.g. motors, PCBs, etc.)
  • Customer-facing experience
  • Early-phase product manufacture and debugging experience
  • Fully IT literate with standard Microsoft Office packages (e.g. Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
  • Full driving license due to client visits being part of this role

Desirable experience that would be an advantage:

  • Working in the scientific glassware and instrumentation sector
  • Chemistry and or chemical engineering experience
  • Good understanding of communications protocols software and hardware
  • Electrical engineering, electronics, electro-mechanical, software, or similar degree or experience
  • Knowledge of electronics circuit design and implementation within measurement & control devices e.g. PCB design, EMC design techniques & solutions, Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA
